Taiwan Notebook OEMs Want to Design Image Sensors In-House

Digitimes: Leading notebook OEMs in Taiwan, including Quanta Computer, are said to be growing their in-house CMOS image sensor development, according to Digitimes sources at CMOS image sensor vendors. As built-in webcams are gaining penetration in notebooks, some OEMs have considered increasing their own CMOS image sensor development to cut costs, the sources explained.

Quanta responded that it will not strategically devote specialized efforts on CMOS image sensor development, and is still placing component orders in accordance to bookings.

  1. As if the R&D associated with developing their own sensors would be cost effective in the end. Most commericial suppliers are having trouble staying in the black. What do the OEMs know that the image sensor houses don't? -EF

  2. Good point. It will take them few years and few tens of million dollars to understand that.

  3. More than 10's of millions. I doubt they are really that naive. They may try it but once they see the real issues with vertical integration they will go back to their core. Semiconductors are different and none of these companies will have the scale to be successful.

  4. Or hire EF ......

  5. Hiring EF does not save time or money. It's just like you want to compete with Intel and hire Paul Otellini - you still need to spend years and tons of money to bring a competitive product.
